Children’s Book Museum
Annie M.G. Schmidt’s Bold and Brassy Kids gives visitors the chance to experience a weird and wonderful adventure in the rebellious world of Annie M.G. Schmidt, the queen of Dutch children’s literature. There are all kinds of things to see and do. Step into Abel’s lift for a thrilling journey, create a cat vlog with Minou, build the most beautiful poems on the Poem Building Site or listen to Schmidt’s greatest hits on Annie FM.
Visitors sign up and personalise their ‘slurper’ for the Annie M.G. Schmidt exhibition. They use the slurper to store the results of the exhibition in their ‘Eigenwijsbewijs’: a virtual dossier of all the items they have collected.
In Scrumple’s word mixer, visitors drag virtual cans of soup into a physical mixer. Alphabet pasta splashes onto the wall, spelling out words. These words must be dragged back into the mixer in order to answer questions, before the soup explodes.
This exhibition’s most innovative and unique interactive installation is the Poem Building Site. Visitors build poems using a set of words, which are printed on wooden boards. They scan their slurper to hear their poem read out to them. Their poem is read out using AI-image recognition combined with text-to-speech technology. Both Dutch and English words can be mixed.
One of the set-ups is the Petteflet: an apartment building where every window hides a story. Children aged 6 to 9 discover the characters and tales behind the curtains. In three rounds, they complete tasks using bingo cards. The windows are touchscreens – as soon as they tap them, the curtains open, revealing the residents of the Petteflet.
Enter the ‘Bus of Tos’ and immerse yourself in the magical world of Annie M.G. Schmidt’s music. The bus is tuned to Annie FM, a special radio station playing the most beloved Schmidt songs. Visitors can browse through a selection of classics, pick their favourite tune, and sing along in true karaoke style.
Visitors step into Abeltje’s elevator for a surprising journey to discover which Annie M.G. Schmidt character they resemble the most. Through six key questions, they’ll uncover their perfect match—whether it’s the adventurous Abeltje, the curious Minou, or another beloved character. Each question brings them closer to the answer, making the experience both playful and engaging.
“So much to do for children from young to old (er)! Creative thinking, personal contribution and a mix between doing and thinking.”
